The Town of Thompson is excited to announce it has been awarded up to $2.2 million through the NY SWIMS initiative to support a major pool improvement project at East Mongaup River Park.
“This is exactly the kind of investment we want to keep bringing to Thompson,” said Town Supervisor Scott Mace. “We are continually working to improve our parks, strengthen community amenities and create more ways for everyone to get outdoors and stay active. Creating a modern, expanded pool area meets all of these goals. We are grateful our project to provide expanded access and safe swimming opportunities was recognized and will now be funded by this amazing program.”
The Town’s goal is to replace the existing pool while minimizing disruption to summer programming. Because the pool is an important part of the Town’s YMCA camp season, officials will evaluate the project timeline carefully and explore ways to sequence construction so the community is not left without a pool during camp. Ideally, construction would begin after camp ends and be completed before camp begins the following year, once the project reaches that stage.
The Town is also exploring ways to make the new pool available beyond camp use. While final details have not yet been determined, the hope is to open and staff the pool for public use after camp hours and on weekends. Town officials are still reviewing operational considerations, including lifeguard staffing, potential membership or user fees and other costs associated with expanded pool access.
The project is currently in the early planning and paperwork phase. The Town is working through required documentation with the State of New York, and additional planning will be needed before a final construction schedule is established. Based on the current process, the new pool would open in 2028 at the earliest.
The funding is part of nearly $21 million in NY SWIMS awards announced by Governor Hochul to support 16 projects across New York. The statewide initiative is designed to expand access to safe, modern swimming facilities, improve public health, promote water safety and create more opportunities for recreation and outdoor activity.
Additional updates will be shared as the project moves forward.
